Mal du Pays is an antagonist NPC in In Stars and Time.

Profile

Appearance

Mal du Pays closely resembles Siffrin, sharing their tall hat, unkempt chin-length hair, trapezoidal cloak, and long pants, but its color scheme is inverted such that it is almost entirely black with white lines. It also shares Siffrin's eyepatch and visible eye, but its eye is occupied by a large swirl and it does not appear to have a mouth.

Combat

Mal Du Pays does not attack on its turn, instead only waiting. It is immune to all Craft types and cannot be damaged.

Because Mal Du Pays cannot be damaged nor damages the player, trying to attack is completely ineffectual. The encounter plays out more akin to a cutscene. Once a certain number of its turns pass, Siffrin will begin speaking to it, and it will eventually respond.

The fastest way to reach this state is to guard on Siffrin's turn, thereby also increasing the time until his next turn and reducing the time spent mindlessly hitting buttons. Make Up The Time should especially be avoided, as giving more turns to Siffrin is pointless.

Trivia

• "Mal Du Pays" is the French word for "homesickness".
• Mal Du Pays is the only enemy whose stats are contained in both the "Enemy" file for all enemies as well as the "Classes" file used to store stats of all playable characters in In Stars and Time. This class may have been used to alter Siffrin's moveset in the encounter.
